Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about On Book Rehearsal.

General

What is On Book Rehearsal?

On Book Rehearsal is a mobile app for iOS and Android that helps actors memorize their lines. It uses AI to act as a scene partner, offering three rehearsal modes: Voice Rehearsal (speak your lines out loud), Italian Run (speed drills), and Flashcard (text-based memorization).

Is On Book Rehearsal free?

Flashcard Mode is always free. Voice Rehearsal and Italian Run require either a Voice Pro subscription (in-app purchase) or active membership in an On Book Pro production. See Settings & Stats for subscription details.

What devices are supported?

On Book Rehearsal is available on iOS and Android devices.

Scripts

What script formats are supported?

Any PDF. Upload a text-based PDF or a scanned/photocopied script — the AI handles both. The processing pipeline uses OCR to read every page, then extracts dialogue, characters, and scene structure automatically.

How does the AI know my lines?

When you upload a script (or receive one from your stage manager), the AI analyzes the PDF and extracts:

  • Scene structure (acts and scenes)
  • Character names
  • All dialogue, assigned to the correct character and scene

This structured data powers all three rehearsal modes. The AI knows which lines are yours and which are cue lines based on the character you select.

Can I use scripts from any show?

Yes. You can upload any script in PDF format, regardless of the show, publisher, or genre. The AI extraction works with plays, musicals, screenplays, and other scripted formats.

Privacy & Data

Is my data private?

Yes. All personal scripts and session data are strictly isolated to your account. No other user — including your stage manager — can access your uploaded scripts, session history, or accuracy scores.

Can my stage manager see my scores?

No. Your rehearsal performance data (accuracy percentages, session counts, trouble spots) is completely private to your account. Stage managers using On Book Pro cannot view your practice sessions or scores.

What data does the app collect?

On Book Rehearsal stores:

  • Your account information (name, email)
  • Scripts you've uploaded or received
  • Rehearsal session data (accuracy, duration, trouble spots)

All data is stored securely using Firebase infrastructure. Voice audio is streamed in real time and is not recorded or stored — it's processed live and discarded.

Rehearsal

Can I rehearse with another person?

Not currently. On Book Rehearsal is designed as a solo practice tool where the AI acts as your scene partner. For partner rehearsal, coordinate with your cast and use the app individually to prepare.

Do I need an internet connection?

It depends on the mode:

ModeInternet Required?
Voice Rehearsal✅ Yes — real-time audio streaming
Italian Run✅ Yes — real-time audio streaming
Flashcard❌ No — works offline once the script is cached

Can I rehearse multiple characters?

Yes. You can select a different character before each session on the setup screen. This is useful if you're understudying or covering multiple roles.

What happens if I say "line?"

In Voice Rehearsal, saying "line?" or tapping the Line button prompts the AI to read your next line. The AI will speak only the next expected line, then return to waiting for you to continue the scene.

Technical

Why can't the AI hear me?

Check your microphone permissions. The app needs microphone access for Voice Rehearsal and Italian Run.

Why does Voice Rehearsal feel laggy?

Voice Rehearsal streams audio in real time, so it's sensitive to network conditions. For the best experience:

  • Use a Wi-Fi connection when possible
  • Avoid VPNs, which add latency
  • Close other apps that use the network heavily

The app says my subscription is inactive, but I'm in a production

Make sure you're signed in with the same email address your stage manager used when adding you to the production in On Book Pro. If you're unsure, check with your stage manager.
